Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Select Tennessee Whiskey Review
As I've highlighted before Jack Daniel's is one of the reasons why I got into whiskey, it was certainly my go to in my nightclub days of youth when my palate preferred things that were definitely on the more saccharine side....it was especially helpful if 'Uncle Jack' was drowned in that other All American concoction that is Coke.
It's fair to say that my palate has altered massively over the last 25 years and as a brand Jack Daniel's is one that I tend to overlook. JD still has it's place, just not on my whiskey shelf it would seem.
Anyway, even though I am prone to bouts of grumpiness when a whiskey doesn't live up to my standards, I'm always loathe to completely write a brand off. So before bounding off to the land of borebon itself I did finally buy another bottle of Jack Daniel's for my whiskey cabinet, but this time the higher proof single barrel option in the UK.
Let's taste!
Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Select 45% abv (£45 from Sainsbury's)
80% corn, 12% rye, 8% malt – age 4 yrs plus. Bottled 19.08.21
Rick R4 – Barrel 21-07476
Nose: Golden syrup, caramelised banana’s, butterscotch, apple peel and a load of vanilla. Furniture polish and toasted oak. Some anise and almonds.
Palate: Quite spicy initially – caramel sweetness followed by clove rock and plenty of oak. A little rye pepperiness and heat followed by a leafy herbal quality towards the end of the palate.
Finish: Quite short with that herbal note remaining alongside warming alcohol heat and caramel.
Score: 5 out of 10
Overall: Definitely a major improvement over the Old No 7 expression. It’s easily sipped but ins’t particularly complex and there is better value elsewhere.
