Powers 15 Yr Old Celtic Whiskey Shop Single Cask 2019 Single Pot Still Review

We're back with round 2 of our Belfast Whiskey Week Irish v Scottish 12 year old plus face offs and we are firmly on Irish soil with the second dram which is a Single Cask release Powers for the Celtic Whiskey Shop in Dublin.

I have a lot of time for the Powers brand in general but the single cask releases, like pretty much any single cask releases you can think of from any brand, have been quite hit and miss. Factor in also that at least in the case of Powers, the single cask releases have a hefty premium over the core releases and I think it's fair to say you want to be fortunate enough to be able to try before you buy.

Doing a bit of research it looks like this would have cost around 199 Euro on release. Spicy!

2019 single cask release, distilled 25/02/2004

Nose: This feels rather ‘old’ – french polish, leather, toasted oak and some rolling tobacco. There is fruitiness here but it takes time to come through. Baked apples, coconut shavings, dried apricots, mint and nutmeg.

Palate: Quite a spicy arrival – pepper and clove plus that mint as well. There’s some caramel alongside baked apple, vanilla and orange peel. The pot still spice is really dominant as is the oak which contributes more tannins than sweetness. Eventually some chocolate covered coconut pieces come through.

Finish: Medium length but dry, peppery and overly oaky.

Score: 4 out of 10

Overall: A pricey, oak dominant and very spicy single cask. Not my favourite Powers single cask I have to say.
